The history of Loguestown Native Breeds.

Location

We are located on the North Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland near the Giant's Causeway World Heritage site and the world famous Bushmills Distillery.

Irish Draughts

Loguestown Irish Draughts (prop. Ivan & Judith Adams) was established in 1989 when we bought our first RID mare, Loahean, by Lahinch (RID) in foal to Clonfert (RID).

Our experience with the draught breed was so positive that in 1991 we decided to purchase a traditional Irish Draught filly with out cross blood lines. She had to be correct, well bred, old fashioned with good straight movement and plenty of good flat bone. In the end we bought two (we could not choose), A Sea Crest filly out of the Blue Peter mare Creggan Rose and a Mountain View filly out of the Gold Coin mare Gold Lassie. In 1993 both fillies were passed RID and so we had the foundation mares for our breeding program. The mares were crossed with carefully chosen stallions, preferably outcross. We used outcross stallions such as Blue Rajah, UIBH FHAILI'81 and Moorpark Boy.

From small beginnings we gradually built up our numbers to a peak of five mares with foals and two yearlings in 2000. Our stock did well in the show ring over the years including Yearling National Champion 2000. Our stock is in demand all over the world from places as far apart as South Africa, United States of America and of course Ireland.

Stock have come and gone over the years and gradually we have changed the emphasis from Draughts to Connemaras. The influence of Loguestown stock can be seen throughout the world (just google loguestown and see!) We are so proud that discerning breeders world wide appreciate what we are trying to do for the breed.

Draughts will always hold a special appeal for us and our aims for them will remain the same.

Why Draughts?

Because of their superb temperament, which makes them so easy to work with, their versatility and of course their hardiness.

Breeding Aims:

We want to:
"Retain the inherent genetic factors responsible for the abundant resilient bone"
"Maintain the bio-diversity of the gene pool" by concentrating on the outcross lines.
With outcross lines "critical evaluation is essential within a spirit of tolerance".

Ode to the Irish Draught

Irish Draughts are in our blood
their kindly natures are what we love.
We are so proud to be involved
with such a breed that is so bold.
You'll find them in all sorts of places
eventing, jumping and team chases.
Greys and browns and chestnuts too
with famous pedigrees through and through.
Henry, Arthur, Young JP
to name a few on the family tree.
Ancient lines, deep within their veins
long may this majestic breed remain
to keep all Irish draught members sane.

Loguestown Connemaras

An exciting new enterprise at Loguestown began in 2004 with the purchase of Derratha Pearl and later Crossowen Ciara, two Registered Class1 Connemara mares, in foal to Westside Mirah and Drumlane Warrior respectively. We hope they will be the catalyst for a new era at Loguestown where the Connemaras will compliment the Draughts in our native horse breeding programme.

Why Connemaras?

As breeders of traditional Irish horses the progression into Connemaras was natural. We have admired them from afar and have come to appreciate their docility coupled with courage, endurance and jumping ability.

Breeding Aims:

"Retain the inherent genetic factors responsible for the abundant resilient bone" "Maintain the bio-diversity of the gene pool"

As with the Draughts the Connemaras are making their mark on the show circuit winning Championships at major shows throughout Ireland. Our home bred filly Loguestown Papaver has been turning heads as has our home bred gelding Loguestown Warrior on the show circuit in GB. [back to top]
